Description
Offered for your consideration is a pair ofTonegen
6½” mid/bass woofers
removed from my
Design Acoustics
PS-6 speakers, made c.1985. As you probably know, Japan’s Tonegen is one of the world’s largest raw driver manufacturers and were Infinity’s main supplier for over 20 years. Tonegen drivers can be found in other quality brands such as
Boston Acoustics
, Bang & Olufsen, and many more.
So, please see the large photos and read the remaining description to decide if these superb mid/bass drivers are correct for your needs.
These woofers are in clean, excellent condition. The textured poly-coated paper cones are structurally perfect—aside from a small manufacturing crease near the center of one cone—and the voice coil center caps are dimple-free flawless. Plus, the steel baskets are well preserved with no dings, scratches, or oxidation. Most importantly,
the aged original factory foam surrounds were just replaced
.
Many speaker companies used foam for their woofer surrounds from the mid 1970’s through 1990’s. Foam offers superior excursion to coated linen and rubber surrounds, but invariably falls apart in 12-20 years no matter what climate you live in. These woofers were no exception—the surrounds were badly cracked with pieces missing. And, as I’m sure most know, proper cone suspension is very important—if you play woofers with faulty surrounds for too long they’ll start to rub the voice coils and ruin them in a short time, so surround replacement is critical. These woofers were no exception; the surrounds were rotted and falling apart to the touch.
Some of you have replaced woofer surrounds before, so you know it’s a time-consuming process that takes a great deal of patience and a steady hand. First, I carefully removed the dense foam flange gaskets. Then I cleaned the cones’ edges and basket flanges to remove the old gummy foam and stubborn factory adhesives, which takes some time to do correctly, and then glued the inner surrounds to the cones. Then, I glued the outer surrounds to the basket flanges after verifying no coil rub. Lastly, I neatly reapplied the factory flange gaskets. I allowed overnight drying of the acrylic glue between each of the steps to achieve the perfect results you see here. Now these woofers are in great shape once again—perhaps even better than new with the modern polyether foam surrounds!
Most importantly, the woofers were fully tested after refoaming and sound excellent with clear, detailed midrange and solid low end for the platform size. Plus, their DC resistance tested at a
perfectly
-matched 5.5Ω each, right in line with a nominal 6-8 ohm driver rating. Lastly, the baskets measure 6⅝” diameter, they stand about 3⅛” tall, and the mounting holes are spaced 4⅜” adjacent / 6¼” diagonal apart, c-t-c.
This is a great find if your DA PS-6 woofers, or similar 6½” drivers by Tonegen, have decayed surrounds, are blown, etc, and will have your speakers sounding their best once again. They’re also ready for action in your next speaker-building project as mid/bass woofers (or even midrange drivers in a large three or four-way)!
As pictured and described, this pair of Tonegen 6½” woofers with painstakingly refurbished surrounds is offered at a competitive price.
