Description
A rare survival - a vintage cardboard shipping box from the 1940s, for 12 quart bottles of Old Crow Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, with labels and stamps for the State of Ohio; according to stamps on the side, the original contents were made Spring 1938, bottled Fall 1942, inspected Aug. 11, 1942. One long side has the serial number and other text information; the other has a great image of a crow, standing on an "Old Crow" banner in black and orange. The short sides are both printed with the same "Old Crow" banner, a "National Distillers" logo, and "12 quarts / bottled by W.A. Gaines". One end also has an Old Crow bottle label affixed to it, along with an inventory label, and is stamped "age four years or older." The top has a weight label, and is stamped "NDP Corp / Ohio DLC / Toledo. The bottom of the box also has a printed shield: "Aid Defense - Help Paper Shortages - Re-use or save this box for your waste-paper dealer."
This box was in the attic of my grandparents' house in Toledo, and had been used to store games, so has a hand-written label on paper tape ("Games: Pokeno, Spoof....") on the top, reattached ca. 1980s with packing tape. The box was originally opened at the liquor store by cutting around the top with a knife, so the top opens like a hinged lid.
Measurements: 15 1/2" x 12" x 12"
Condition: Not too bad, considering its age. Apart from the "Games" label mentioned above, one corner has been reinforced with paper shipping tape (old style - just paper), and the long side with text has been lightly scribbled out with a black crayon or chalk. The bottom is worn, and may have been damp at some point, one bottom corner is bruised, and there are small punctures/dents in two sides. It also looks like it was used to store canned goods at some point, as there are faint rust rings on the inside bottom (see photos). The top "hinge" is a bit worn, and the top is dusty, and slightly depressed from having other things on top of it.
