    Similar to the JBL 376 compression driver, Altec 290-4Gs have phenolic diaphragms.
    A “phenolic" diaphragm is actually a linen dome that's been sprayed with a phenolic-resin compound (Bakelite) instead of the more usual aluminum dome.
    The difference is better damping but less extended frequency response.
    Metal diaphragm drivers - like the JBL 375, and Altec's 288 series - sound metallic, they are not as well damped and tend to ‘ring’ but they have more extended high frequency response than phenolic diaphragm drivers.
    Phenolic diaphragm drivers - like the JBL 376, JBL 2482 and the Altec 290 series - sound much more natural, they do not sound metallic.
    Phenolic diaphragm drivers are not as extended in the treble range as aluminum so you need a super tweeter... but you need a super tweeter even for metal-diaphragm drivers if you want response to 20kHz.
    The EV T-350 and T-35 are phenolic-diaphragm super high-frequency (SHF) tweeters and they work very well with phenolic-diaphragm high-frequency (HF) drivers.
    My HF horns are fitted with B&C DCM 50 drivers which have treated-paper diaphragms - which also sound far more natural than metal diaphragm drivers. The DCM 50 is a modern neodymium-powered version of the famous vintage RCA compression driver the model 1428.
    If you want a more natural-sounding horn system this matched pair of phenolic-diaphragm drivers is a good opportunity.
    The DCR of both drivers is 4.1. I play-tested them this morning, they sounded very good, no distortion of any sort and they play LOUD! Sound pressure levels are the same for both.
    I used latex adhesive to secure thick felt pads to the rear chambers - you will hear no ringing from these drivers.
    Please see the photos to check DCR and cosmetic condition. The drivers, obviously, are used, they do show some wear, but both are in as-new operating condition.
