Description
This item is a 41 1/4"right-handed
original hickory shafted wood. A compact head full brass soleplate spoon. Marked J Foulis Jr on the crown. James Foulis was one of the famous golfing Foulis brothers. Perhaps the most
well-known
of the clan. From club maker, to teacher, to player, to golf architect, James Foulis did it all. He won the 1896 U S Open, designed the first mashie niblick and invented the bramble cover for Haskell balls.
Very g
ood vintage
condition. Refinished by expert club restorer John Gates of St Augustine, FL a number of years ago. John is often acknowledged as the best wood restorer and hasn't done any work for a good while. Buy one of his works of art while you can still find them. Not sure this club has been played with since the restoration.
Please look at the many zoom pictures to get a better idea of condition. The shaft is the apparently original hickory.
It does have a bend,
I see no cracks and it is tight at the hosel. Feels like a regular flex. The grip is the apparently original long leather wrap that is in fair vintage condition. 15* loft and a C 0 swingweight. A truly lovely collectible club particularly if you are from the Chicago area. Great Christmas gift for the golfer.
If you are considering playing with this club, while I see no issues with this shaft (other than those mentioned above), I suggest that whipping be added just above the hosel to help prevent breakage. These old wooden shafts often have hidden defects and are liable to break at any time. I do not guarantee wooden shafts or heads against breakage when put into play. Never hit an old wooden shafted club off a driving range mat. Never hit an old wooden shafted wood with a hard range ball.
Shipping in the US is calculated and based on a 3
-pound
box. This item shipped UPS Ground. For those of you that never ship but only receive items, the further you are from me in NC the more shipping will be. That is the way the carriers charge. On top of that, eBay and takes almost 15% of what I receive for shipping (out of I receive .50) and I would like to break even. eBay collects sales tax for many states. They charge me 15% for that service and I never see that money.
