Description
This item is an antique vintage right-handed 37 3/8" wood shaft iron. It is a dot face Recorder model 3 iron. Made by George Nicoll in Scotland at their Leven Fife factory. Rustless metal head. The head is in very good vintage condition. 28* loft and a C 2 swingweight. The head is clean and not all rusted. It has very few of the expected play nicks and dings. It is a very interesting shaft called a Boyden Patent Shaft. Please look at the many zoom pictures for a better idea of condition. The shaft is an old apparently original hickory. It is a very interesting shaft called a Boyden Shaft (see attached Patent).
You have heard of spliced neck woods, well this one is a spliced two-piece shaft. Jeff Ellis calls them very rare. The shaft is straight, I see no cracks and it is tight at the hosel. All hickory shafted clubs should be re-set prior to play. The grip is a newer long leather wrap that is in good vintage condition. Some whipping has been added just above the hosel and I believe someone was playing with this rare club.
If you are considering playing with this club all wooden shafted irons should be re-set prior to play. While I see no issues with the shaft (other than those mentioned above), I suggest that whipping be added just above the hosel to help prevent breakage. These wooden shafts often have hidden defects and are liable to break at any time. I do not guarantee wooden shafts against breakage when put into play. Never hit an old wooden shafted club off a driving range mat. Never hit an old wooden shafted wood with a hard range ball.
Shipping in the US is calculated and based on a 3
-pound
box. This item shipped UPS Ground. For those of you that never ship but only receive items, the further you are from me in NC the more shipping will be. That is the way the carriers charge. On top of that, eBay and takes almost 15% of what I receive for shipping (out of I receive .50) and I would like to break even. eBay collects sales tax for many states. They charge me 15% for that service and I never see that money.
