Antique Vintage Hickory Shaft Early Smooth Face Niblick D 5

Description

This item is a 36 1/2" right handed antique vintage hickory shafted iron. Can't make out the makers name but is is an old early smooth face small headed (2"x2 5/8") niblick 1890's vintage. Often called a rut niblick.
The head is clean and in good vintage condition. Yes it has the expected play nicks and dings, particularly on the face and leading edge.
Please look at the many zoom pictures to get a better idea of condition. The shaft is an old hickory. It is straight, I see no cracks and it is tight at the hosel. All hickory shafted clubs should be re-set prior to play. The grip is a newer long leather wrap that is in good playable condition. 48* loft and a D 5
swingweight for play.  Looks like this club has already been made into a player. Put it in your gutty play set.
If you are considering playing with this club, while I see no issues with this hickory shaft (other than those mentioned above), I suggest that whipping be added just above the hosel to help prevent breakage. These hickory shafts often have hidden defects and are liable to break at any time. I do not guarantee hickory shafts against breakage when put into play. Never hit an old hickory shafted club off a driving range mat. Never hit an old hickory shafted wood with a hard range ball.
