This item is a 38 1/4" right handed antique vintage hickory shafted iron. Marked Ben
Sayers
North Berwick. S&G for Spence & Gourlay the makers and an L for Ladies. An early smooth face 1890's-1900 club.
The head is clean and in good vintage condition.
Please look at the many zoom pictures to get a better idea of condition. The shaft is an old original hickory marked B Sayers No Berwick. A nice old dark stain. The shaft has a bend, I see no cracks and it is tight at the hosel. All hickory shafted clubs should be re-set prior to play. The grip is a newer sueded long leather wrap that is in good condition
. 22* loft and an A 7 swingweight for play.
If you are considering playing with this club, while I see no issues with this hickory shaft (other than those mentioned above), I suggest that whipping be added just above the hosel to help prevent breakage. These hickory shafts often have hidden defects and are liable to break at any time. I do not guarantee hickory shafts against breakage when put into play. Never hit an old hickory shafted club off a driving range mat. Never hit an old hickory shafted wood with a hard range ball.
