Description
This item is a 40 1/4"right-handed
hickory shafted early smooth face iron. It is what is called a Tom Morris Patented round sole cleek. Morris invented this style iron and
patented
it. Tom Stewart made a number of them for
Morris,
but the Patent was not well
protected,
and Tom Stewart also made some for his
costumers
which did not include the Patent information. 22* loft and an E 3 swingweight. Made by Tom Stewart of St Andrews Scotland. Has the famous Stewart Pipe cleek mark with no registration information below the pipe. The head is in good clean vintage condition. Shows the expected nicks and play dings.
Please look at the many zoom pictures to get a better idea of condition. The shaft is the old hickory. It has a minor bend in the grip area, I see no cracks, and it is tight at the hosel (always re-set shafts prior to play). Looks like it was poorly re-set some time ago and the hosel near the pin is indented. Th
e grip is an old long leather wrap that is in fair to good vintage condition. Hard to find Stewart iron.
If you are considering playing with this club all wooden shafted irons should be re-set prior to play. While I see no issues with the shaft (other than those mentioned above), I suggest that whipping be added just above the hosel to help prevent breakage. These wooden shafts often have hidden defects and are liable to break at any time. I do not guarantee wooden shafts against breakage when put into play. Never hit an old wooden shafted club off a driving range mat. Never hit an old wooden shafted wood with a hard range ball.
Shipping in the US is calculated for this item and based on a 3-pound box via UPS Ground. The closer you are to me in NC (27712 zip) the less shipping will be. That is the way shipping works as it costs me more to ship a greater distance with all the carriers. eBay charges Sales Tax for many states. They even take their 15% cut from me on the tax (like they do on shipping as well) even though I never see that money.
