    Description

Up for auction is a 1964 Vintage Wilson 8802 Putter in great condition with Big FatPaddle Grip with silver piping - Wilson Flag End Cap in great condition. All original and the 'real 1964 deal'!! Red and Green HeadSpeed shaftband is present and in excellent condition. Putter is in great shape for its age and is authentic.
Here are the diagnostic characteristics which this putter and all true 64Wilson 8802's have: When Arnold Palmer left Wilson in 1963 Wilson Co was no longer able to use his name so they relabeled this model the Wilson 8802 which was the catalogue number for the Arnold Palmer putter. The shape of the 1964 8802 is nearly identical to the Designed By Arnold Palmer other than the sole stamp.
The shaft is a stepped Head Speed as do the Palmer models. On this five step shaft, the first step is 6" from the top of the hosel with 3 1/4"subsequent steps. 1964 grips came in various colors, brown, burgundy and black with silver piping. The Big Fat Paddle Grip was used only on the Arnold Palmers an
d the 1964 8802's. The grip end cap has the Wilson red and blue flags logo.
The sole stamping is correct for a true 1964 - the paintfill on the sole has "Wilson" in red with the "The" and "8802" in black. The stamp on the sole was a "rolled stamp" and produced a deeper imprint of the first 8. If any of these elements are missing, it is not an original 1964 8802. All these characteristics are present on thisputter!
The face is always 27/32" high in the middle, very close to the diameter of a nickel. This is known as the "nickel face"which is correct. Some later models also had this feature, so it is not a perfect test. The back of the blade has a pronounced undercut between the flange and the topline.
Thisputter has some light 'bag chatter' as might be expected, as no one used putter covers back in the day, but it is not at all bad considering its age. It’s in far-better shape than the average 1964 8802 example.
The head has not been polished or "cleaned up." It still has some of the original chrome frosting present! The top line has not been altered, never had a sight line that was removed.
